Checklist: getting students to complete course evaluations

Checklist of six steps that raise students' reasons to complete course evaluations, from invitation wording to showing what changed last year.
Students take part when they believe someone reads and acts on what they say.

A checklist for QA teams and programme directors planning a course evaluation round. It turns expectancy theory research on why students skip evaluations into six steps: lead with better teaching, report back on last year's changes, say who reads the answers, cut unused questions, give class time and check who is missing. Koji's evaluations can be shared by link or personal invite, so the same checklist applies to its invitations.

What's in this checklist

  • Lead the invitation with better teaching and better courses
  • Report two or three changes made from last year's feedback
  • Tell students who reads their answers
  • Cut questions you will not act on
  • Give in-class time to complete the evaluation
  • Check which student groups are under-represented
