Framework

What explains the first-in-family graduate pay gap

Women graduates in England, where the first-in-family wage penalty is about 7.4%

Framework of six factors behind the first-in-family pay gap for women graduates in England: attainment, institution, subject, employer, job match, motherhood.
Most of the gap traces to factors a programme can see, and some it can shape Source: Adamecz-Völgyi, Henderson and Shure (2022), Journal of Population Economics

A framework summarising the observable factors that explain most of the wage gap between first-in-family women graduates in England and women whose parents had degrees, from research by Adamecz-Völgyi, Henderson and Shure. It is for programme leads and quality teams reading graduate outcome data. Use it to separate what a programme can influence, such as job match and employer links, from intake. Koji can run graduate interviews that ask how alumni found work.

What's in this framework

  1. Prior attainment: Lower school results on entry explain part of the gap.
  2. Institution: Fewer first-in-family graduates attended an elite university.
  3. Degree subject: Subject choices differ, and subjects pay differently.
  4. Employer size: More work for smaller employers, which tend to pay less.
  5. Job match: More are in jobs that do not require a degree.
  6. Motherhood: Motherhood explains part of the gap for women.
