The four types of grand tour question

Typical, specific, guided and task-related tours, with an example of each

Framework showing James Spradley's four types of grand tour question: typical, specific, guided and task-related, each with an example.
Pick the type that matches what you need to learn Source: James Spradley, The Ethnographic Interview (1979)

James Spradley described four kinds of grand tour question in The Ethnographic Interview: typical, specific, guided and task-related. Each asks the participant to walk you through a broad experience in their own words, and each suits a different goal, from mapping routines to watching a task. Use it when writing the opening of a discussion guide. In Koji you can set the opening and the follow-ups for an AI-moderated interview the same way.

What's in this framework

  1. Typical: Ask how things usually go. "Could you describe a typical day on the job?"
  2. Specific: Ask about one real occasion. "Tell me about yesterday, from when you started work."
  3. Guided: Ask them to show you around. "Could you show me the dashboard you use each morning?"
  4. Task-related: Ask them to do a task and explain as they go. "Set up a new project the way you normally would."
