Checklist
How to decide after a five-second homepage test
Working rules for a rewritten first screen

A checklist for founders who rewrote their homepage and want to know whether the new first screen is understood. It covers who to test with, how long to show the page, what to ask and how to act on each result. The pass marks are working rules from running such tests, not published standards, so confirm with a real action such as trial starts once you have traffic.

What's in this checklist
- Test with 20 people who fit your customer, 10 per version
- Show one version per person for 5 seconds, then hide it
- Ask what you do, who it is for and what they remember
- 8 or more of 10 get it and it beats the old page: ship it
- 5 to 7 of 10 get it: keep the headline, fix the subhead
- Under 5 of 10: go back to phrases three of five users shared
- Note the category testers file you under, even when wrong
- Once you have traffic, compare trial starts for a few weeks
