Five indicators of a programme's assessment pattern

Framework listing five indicators of a programme's assessment pattern: summative tasks, formative tasks, variety, share of exams and amount of feedback.

The five indicators Jessop and Tomas (2017) used to compare assessment patterns across 73 programmes in 14 UK universities, building on the TESTA approach. It is for programme leaders and quality teams who audit assessment load and feedback at degree level. Counting these across a programme often shows patterns that module reviews miss.

What's in this framework

  1. Summative assessments: How many marked tasks count towards the degree, across all modules.
  2. Formative assessments: How many tasks give practice and feedback without counting towards the mark.
  3. Variety of assessment: How many different kinds of task students meet across the programme.
  4. Share of exams: What proportion of assessment is by examination.
  5. Amount of feedback: How much written and spoken feedback students get across the degree.
