How to read open-text course evaluation comments

Comments come from a self-selected group, so count and check before you quote

Checklist for reading open-text course evaluation comments: report the comment rate, count themes, verify reports, weight judgements, check ratings.
Use these checks so a few vivid comments do not stand in for the whole class

A seven-point checklist for reading the open-text comments in student course evaluations without over-weighting them. Only some respondents write comments, and those who do often hold stronger views, so themes need counts and a check against the ratings. It is for quality officers, programme leads and lecturers. Koji asks every student follow-up questions in an AI-moderated conversation, so explanation is part of each response.

What's in this checklist

  • Report the comment rate next to the response rate
  • Group comments into themes and count the students behind each
  • Verify factual reports, whatever their number
  • Weight judgements by how many students share them
  • Check comment themes against the ratings
  • Remember that students who wrote nothing still show up in the ratings
  • Ask every student to explain their answers
