Template analysis in six steps

Nigel King's method for building and revising a hierarchical coding template

Process diagram of the six steps of template analysis, from getting familiar with the data to applying the final template
The loop between steps 4 and 5 is where the real analysis happens Source: Brooks, McCluskey, Turley and King, 2015

The six stages of template analysis as described by Brooks, McCluskey, Turley and King in 2015: familiarisation, preliminary coding, clustering, an initial template built on a subset, repeated revision, and applying the final template to all the data. Use it as a checklist when analysing interview transcripts with some themes known in advance. Koji's per-question interview analysis gives you a head start on the early steps.

What's in this process

  1. Get familiar with the data: Read a good sample of transcripts before coding. Note first impressions and recurring language.
  2. Do some preliminary coding: Mark relevant passages in a few transcripts. Start with a few tentative a priori themes if you have them.
  3. Cluster codes into themes: Group related codes into themes and sub-themes. Look for integrative themes that cut across them.
  4. Write the initial template: Build a first coding template from a subset of the data, with a short definition for each theme.
  5. Apply it and revise: Code more transcripts. Add, split, merge, move or drop themes until new data stops changing it.
  6. Finalise and apply to all: Code every transcript with the final template and use it to structure the write-up.
