Checklist
Evaluating thesis supervision: a checklist

A checklist for programme directors and quality teams who want to evaluate master's or bachelor's thesis supervision. It covers what to ask students, drawing on research that links the supervisor-student relationship to grades and satisfaction, and how to report results when each supervisor has only a few students. Use it to design a supervision evaluation or review an existing one. Koji can run the student side as a short conversational evaluation.
What's in this checklist
- Ask about the relationship, not only the feedback: support, warmth, availability
- Ask whether feedback pointed forward to the next draft
- Ask how much structure the student wanted, and how much they got
- Collect feedback separately from the grade, and say so
- Report at programme level, or pool several cohorts per supervisor
- Set a minimum number of students before showing any supervisor's results
- Use results for supervisor development, not for ranking
- Keep thesis grading independent of the supervisor where you can
