Comparison
Teacher-focused vs student-focused teaching
The two scales of the Approaches to Teaching Inventory and the learning they go with

A comparison of the two approaches measured by the Approaches to Teaching Inventory: information transmission with a teacher focus, and conceptual change with a student focus. It summarises the link Trigwell, Prosser and Waterhouse found between these approaches and students' surface or deep approaches to learning in 48 Australian science classes. Use it in teaching development sessions or when choosing what a course evaluation should ask. Koji's course interviews can ask students how they went about learning the subject, not only how satisfied they were.
What's in this comparison
Teacher-focused (ITTF)
- Intention: pass on the content of the syllabus
- Planning centres on what the teacher does
- Students cast as receivers of information
- Linked with more surface learning in the class
Student-focused (CCSF)
- Intention: change how students understand the subject
- Planning centres on what students do and think
- Students build and question their own ideas
- Linked, more weakly, with deeper learning
