Checklist
Usability test task checklist
Seven checks for every task before a participant sees it

A checklist for writing usability test tasks and scenarios. Use it to review each task in a test plan: it should be realistic, actionable, free of interface words, specific, limited to one goal, have a clear end state and have been piloted. The first rules come from Marieke McCloskey's Nielsen Norman Group guidance on task scenarios, and the advice on being specific from Jeff Sauro at MeasuringU. Koji can help you find the real goals behind your tasks with short AI interviews before the test.
Where this appears
What's in this checklist
- Based on a goal real users come to do
- Asks them to do it, not say how they would
- Uses their words, never the labels on the screen
- Specific enough that they know what done looks like
- One goal per task, with no hidden second task
- Success is defined before the study starts
- Piloted with someone who doesn't know the design
