Klaviyo + Koji: Turn Post-Purchase and Win-Back Flows into AI Customer Interviews

Connect Klaviyo to Koji to trigger AI voice and text interviews from email and SMS flows and segments, then sync themes and structured scores back to Klaviyo profiles for sharper segmentation.

The short version

Connect Klaviyo to Koji and your email and SMS flows stop asking one-question surveys and start running real AI-moderated interviews. Trigger a Koji interview from any Klaviyo flow or segment — post-purchase, win-back, browse-abandonment, VIP — and Koji writes the themes, quotes, and structured scores back to the customer''s Klaviyo profile as properties and events you can segment on. For ecommerce and DTC brands, that means every flow doubles as a voice-of-customer engine, and your segmentation gets smarter with every conversation.

Why connect Klaviyo and Koji?

Klaviyo already knows what your customers do — what they bought, opened, clicked, and abandoned. What it can''t tell you is why: why a first-time buyer didn''t come back, why a subscriber churned, what nearly stopped someone at checkout, or what your VIPs actually love. Those answers only come from conversations, and most brands don''t have the bandwidth to run them at scale.

Koji is an AI-native research platform that runs those conversations for you. It conducts moderated interviews in voice or text — the customer picks — with an AI interviewer that asks intelligent, context-aware follow-up questions in real time, then analyzes every transcript automatically into themes, verbatim quotes, and quantified answers. Point Klaviyo''s best-in-class targeting at Koji''s conversational depth and you get:

  • The right customer, the right question. Use Klaviyo segments to interview exactly who matters — one-and-done buyers, lapsed subscribers, high-LTV VIPs.
  • Depth a one-click survey can''t reach. Instead of a single CSAT tap, Koji has a genuine back-and-forth and probes each answer.
  • Feedback that fuels segmentation. Results flow back to Klaviyo profiles, so a churn reason or satisfaction score becomes a property you can build flows and segments around.

What data flows between Klaviyo and Koji

Klaviyo → Koji (trigger + personalize)

  • Flow and segment membership triggers the interview invite
  • Profile properties (name, first-order date, product purchased, LTV tier) personalize the conversation

Koji → Klaviyo (sync insights back)

  • Interview status events (invited, started, completed) written to the profile timeline
  • A short AI summary and top themes saved as profile properties
  • Structured scores — an NPS scale, a single_choice churn reason, a yes_no repurchase-intent — saved as typed properties you can segment on
  • A link to the full transcript and report

Because Koji''s structured questions return clean, typed values, what lands in Klaviyo is not messy free text — it is segmentation-ready data.

Setup

Option 1 — Zapier or Make (no code)

The quickest route for most brands.

  1. Connect Klaviyo and Koji in your automation tool. See the Zapier research automation guide for the base recipe.
  2. Trigger: a customer enters a Klaviyo segment or completes a flow step (for example, 14 days after first delivery).
  3. Action: create a Koji interview and send the invite, passing the profile''s email, phone, and properties for personalization. Koji can invite by link inside a Klaviyo email or SMS.
  4. Return trip: on Koji interview completed, update the Klaviyo profile with the summary, themes, and structured scores, or push a custom event.

Option 2 — Webhooks (custom, real-time)

Koji emits webhooks on every interview event. Send them to a handler that calls Klaviyo''s API to update profiles and track events in real time — ideal if you want a Completed Interview metric flowing into Klaviyo for flow triggers.

Option 3 — MCP + API (AI-driven)

Drive it from Claude using Koji''s Model Context Protocol integration (15 tools) plus the developer API: "Pull the Lapsed VIPs segment from Klaviyo, run a win-back interview for each, and write the top churn reason back to the profile." The CRM research integration guide covers importing audiences at scale.

Three high-value flows to wire up first

1. Post-purchase VoC (first-order, day 14). Trigger a short voice or text interview after the first order settles. Open with "how has it been so far?", then ask a scale satisfaction question and an open-ended "what almost stopped you from buying?" Koji probes each answer, and the quality gate ensures only genuine, effortful sessions count — so low-effort taps never skew your data or consume credits. Write satisfaction and the top hesitation theme back to the profile.

2. Win-back / churned subscriber. When a customer lands in your Lapsed or Cancelled segment, run a Customer Discovery exit interview. Ask a single_choice primary reason, a yes_no "would you come back if we fixed that?", and an open-ended probe. Sync the churn reason to Klaviyo and let it trigger a tailored win-back flow — a real closed feedback loop.

3. VIP / repeat-buyer research. Interview your highest-LTV segment about what they value and what they''d rank next on your roadmap using a ranking question. The result: prioritized product feedback from the customers who matter most, attached to the profiles you already treat as VIPs.

Why Koji beats a survey app in your flow

Ecommerce feedback usually means a star-rating email or a one-question post-purchase survey. Those capture a number and nothing else. Koji captures the number and the story — its AI interviewer follows up like a skilled researcher ("you gave a 6 — what would have made it a 9?"), works in voice or text on any device, and supports 6 structured question types in a single conversation. Against traditional tools like SurveyMonkey or Typeform dropped into a flow, Koji is the modern, AI-native upgrade: more depth, structured data, and automatic write-back to Klaviyo — no manual tagging, no separate spreadsheet of responses.

The payoff for a DTC brand is compounding: every flow you already run becomes a source of structured customer truth, and your Klaviyo segmentation gets sharper the more you talk to customers.

What it costs to run

Koji''s credit model keeps flow-triggered research predictable. A text interview is 1 credit, a voice interview 3, and the quality gate means low-effort sessions never consume credits. New accounts start free with 10 credits (no card); paid plans are €29/month (Insights, 29 credits) and €79/month (Interviews, 79 credits), with pre-paid packs for higher volume. So you can attach interviews to a high-traffic post-purchase flow without abandoned taps running up costs — only genuine conversations bill.

Measuring the payoff

Because results land as typed Klaviyo properties, you can measure impact directly in the tools you already use. Build a segment of customers whose post-purchase satisfaction scale was 8 or higher and watch their repeat-purchase rate; trigger a tailored win-back flow off the single_choice churn reason and track recovery; or trend the top hesitation theme month over month to see whether product and messaging changes are working. The feedback loop is closed inside Klaviyo: interview to property to segment to flow to outcome. See the structured questions guide below for how each question type maps to a property you can act on.
